When in Rome… . or at least close….

I am rapidly approaching the two month mark for living in Italy.  It has been pretty fabulous.  There have been a lot of changes, lessons and challenges.  Let’s be honest, food is as much a part of the Italian culture as it is for Plates and Parties!  Everyday in Italy is pretty much a food party and it is a fun party.

That said, I had acquired some food habits and aversions that don’t quite fit in here.  I LOVE Mexican food.  Chips, beans, tortillas, margaritas, I love it all!  Florence has one edible Mexican joint.  In general, there is little great non Italian food, which is a bit of culture shock after living in LA where every country’s food is at your fingertips.

I NEVER or at least VERY rarely ate any pork or any cured meats.  But here, that is what Italians eat, so I do now too.  Boar, prosciutto, and ham are staples.  Lunches are the big meal of the day here, not dinner.  Coffee is served in very small cups.  The list goes on… . But, the point is I want to try it all, do it all and make what I can and I want to share it with you.  I have a lot of catching up to do.  I have travelled a ton this summer.  Each area in Italy has its own food style, noodle inventions, sauce preferences and pizza customs and over the coming weeks I will share with you what I have learned.  Ciao for now…
